A Secret Service agent assigned to protect President Joe Biden’s granddaughter shot at multiple individuals attempting to break into an unmarked government vehicle in Washington, D.C. late Sunday, officials said.
“On Nov. 12 around 11:58 p.m. in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC, Secret Service agents encountered possibly three individuals breaking a window on a parked and unoccupied government vehicle,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement.
“During this encounter, a federal agent discharged a service weapon and it is believed no one was struck, he said.
The suspects fled the scene in a red vehicle, and a regional lookout was issued. There was no threat to any protectees, Guglielmi said. The incident is being investigated by the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and the Secret Service.
The agents were assigned to protect Naomi Biden, 29, the oldest daughter of Hunter Biden. She married attorney Peter Neal in a ceremony at the White House last year.
Washington has seen a surge of carjackings and car thefts this year. Metropolitan Police have reported more than 6,000 car thefts so far in 2023, a 98% increase over 2022, and nearly 7,000 thefts of items inside vehicles.
Last month, three armed assailants carjacked Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, who was not physically harmed.
