A Twitch streamer in West Virginia was shot in the leg by her abusive ex before he exchanged gunfire with police and took his own life, police said.
Holle Peno was at the Martinsburg apartment of her current boyfriend, the popular YouTuber Hunter Avallone, on Friday afternoon when her ex arrived with a shotgun and shot through the door, striking Peno in the leg. Avallone began filming the scene in the moments after she was shot, and captured the sound of gunfire outside the apartment.
In a video shared on Instagram, Avallone said his landlord had warned him about a shady armed man on the property.
Im still trying to process this and Im most likely in shock as I write this. But only a few hours ago, Holles ex boyfriend Conrad showed up at my apartment building with a shotgun. He shot through my building door, injuring Holles leg in the process, Avallone wrote alongside the video. I recorded the final moments in which were hiding on the back porch. You can hear him shoot at police before ultimately taking his own life.
The Martinsburg Police Department said in a statement that officers responded to a report of a shooting at 253 North Queen Street at around 12:30 p.m., and engaged the suspect as he attempted to breach an interior apartment door while continuing to fire his weapon.
A brief exchange of gunfire ensued, resulting in the suspect taking his own life, police said.
Peno was transported to Berkeley Medical Center for the treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Our officers responded swiftly and courageously to this dangerous situation. Their decisive actions, I have no doubt, prevented further harm and potentially saved lives. I am profoundly proud of their bravery and commitment to protecting our community, Chief Erin Gibbons said in a statement.
Holle and I are physically ok but mentally, this is gonna do some serious damage. Holle has been amazing and shes been incredibly brave and strong throughout this ordeal, Avallone wrote.
Peno was with the man identified only as Conrad for 11 years before they broke it off. In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, she revealed she was struggling with her feelings about the incident.
“Every time I close my eyes, I see him lying there,” Peno says through sobs. “I hate how that was the last time I saw him because he wasnt all bad. He was good sometimes.”
In a followup Instagram video on Sunday, Peno she was beginning to come out of shock.
“I feel so torn up inside. I loved him for 11 years despite the abuse, and he couldnt love me enough to let me leave,” she wrote.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
