As a man in a U-Haul truck went on a “violent rampage” striking pedestrians and cyclists on Monday morning, a New York City Police officer rushed to clear children from a Playstreet a few blocks away.
Body-worn camera video released by the NYPD show 68th Precinct officers clearing a Brooklyn Playstreet of elementary school children, teachers and staff. The Playstreet is closed off by only small barricades, and large groups of children can be seen gathered outside.
One person was killed and eight others were injured during the rampage in the Bay Ridge neighborhood of Brooklyn, including a police officer. The spree allegedly began when the driver, 62-year-old Weng Sor, fled a traffic stop after referring to an “invisible object,” according to police.
At a Tuesday press conference, New York Police Chief of Detectives James Essig said that based in their investigation, “we believe Mr. Sor was suffering from a mental health crisis.”
Sor faces one charge of second-degree murder and seven counts of attempted murder. On Wednesday, a judge ordered that Sor undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
