A driver was arrested Wednesday after crashing his truck into the lobby of the Grand Junction Police Department in Colorado.
An exterior surveillance video released by the police department shows the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado in the parking lot turning toward the buildings entrance at around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. An interior view shows the truck crashing inside.
According to the arrest affidavit, “there was no hesitation, stopping, or slowing before the truck turned directly towards the main lobby doors, accelerated and drove through two sets of metal doors with bullet proof window panes.”
There were no reported injuries. Damages are estimated to be more than $100,000 but less than $1,000,000, police said.
The driver, identified as Nathan David Chacon, 45, has been the subject of “at least 90 calls for service” in the last few years, in which he reports “strange happenings that have been unfounded,” according to the affidavit.
Police say Chacon told them he left his home Wednesday and believed he was being followed by multiple cars. Chacon told police he began driving down side streets to avoid the pursuers, finally driving to the police station.
Chacon allegedly told police that as he chose to drive into the lobby because he “did not want to be killed.” He allegedly told police he “knew it was dumb” but “knew what he needed to do in order to be heard.”
Chacon was arrested and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on charges of attempted murder, attempted assault, attempted vehicular homicide, attempted vehicular assault, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
