The Florida Keys celebrated 200 years since the founding of Monroe County with a record-breaking Key lime pie on Monday.
Ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, Monroe County celebrated the bicentennial of its founding on July 3, 1823, with a giant Key lime pie at Big Pine Key Community Park in Big Pine Key. Local chefs prepared a pie with a 13.14-foot diameter with the hope of setting a world record.
A video and photos shared by Andy Newman of the Florida Keys News Bureau show a crowd of people around the pie, which was served by local officials.
The Key lime pie is a variation on a lemon cream pie that is believed to have originated in the Florida Keys, using the locally available tropical limes. The Key lime, yellower and more tart than the more common Persian lime, is native to southeast Asia, and was brought to the Caribbean, including the Florida Keys, by the Spanish.
