A pair of teens whose canoe capsized in a frigid Vermont pond on Sunday were safely rescued thanks to a couple who heard them as they walked their dog nearby.
The Colchester Police Department said the couple called 911 shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Sunday after hearing screams for help as they walked their dog on the trails around Colchester Pond.
While emergency responders were en route, the couple guided the teens to shore and gave them their own dry clothes to help them warm up. Moments later two police officers and a retired firefighter reached the teens on the north side of the pond, about a mile from the parking lot, police said.
The officers and retired firefighter provided hypothermic care while awaiting additional rescue teams from Colchester Fire, Colchester Technical Rescue, Colchester Rescue, Essex Rescue, and Milton Rescue.
Colchester Technical Rescue deployed two boats and moved the teenagers from the north side of the pond back to the staging location. They were then transported to the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Police said that by 9:55 p.m., the teens were reported to be in stable condition at the hospital.
Even though the weather is getting warmer, we would like to remind the public that the water temperature is still in the 30s and 40s, police said. If you are going on the water, make sure to wear life jackets, and let someone know where youre going to be.
