A teenage girl died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after allegedly taking a deputy’s firearm in the lobby of a Los Angeles County Sheriff Station Sunday evening, authorities said.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said a Hispanic juvenile began knocking on the front door of the sheriff station in the city of Industry at around 7:40 p.m. on Sunday. When deputies walked to the lobby door, the girl lunged into the lobby and reached for the deputys holstered firearm and took possession of it, the sheriff’s department said Monday.
The deputies struggled with the girl, and during the struggle, she sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the sheriff’s department said.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded and the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured in the incident.
The sheriff’s department did not release the identity of the girl, pending family notification, but she was described by local outlet ABC7 as being 17 years old.
The sheriff’s department said the incident stemmed from a family disturbance call deputies from the Industry Sheriff Station responded to shortly before the incident.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
