New York City police have arrested a suspect in connection with a stabbing spree across Queens that left five people injured.
Jermain Rigueur, 27, was arrested late Wednesday and charged with three counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault, one count of attempted assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, per reports.
Police believe the first attack occurred back on Jan. 8, when a 61-year-old male victim was stabbed in the back while walking by himself in a residential area.
In this incident, the suspect actually laughed in the victim’s face after he stabbed him, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said during a press conference Wednesday.
The second stabbing took place a week later, when a 34-year-old woman was stabbed as she walked home from work just after midnight Tuesday. Police were able to collect surveillance images of the suspect holding the hunting knife used in the attack. Police released those images to the public in the hope of identifying him.
Three more attacks took place on Wednesday morning, police said. The final victim got into an argument with the suspect over a bus seat, and when they got off the bus, the suspect stabbed the victim and fled on foot, police said.
All five victims survived and were expected to recover.
Police said they are investigating whether Rigueur was also the suspect in a sixth stabbing incident on a J train platform in Brooklyn on Wednesday.
