A North Carolina college student was hospitalized after a shooting in a dorm Tuesday night prompted a campus lockdown, officials said.
The North Carolina Central University Police Department responded to a report of possible gunshots at the Lawson Street Residence Hall at around 10:15 p.m. on Tuesday, the university said in a statement Wednesday.
Officers were already at the scene preparing to conduct proactive safety checks of the residence hall when the call came in, and responded quickly, and a campus lockdown was ordered.
City of Durham EMS happened to be on the scene attending to an unrelated medical call, the university said, and quickly rendered aid to one person who sustained at least one gunshot wound.
The victim, later identified as a student, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
NCCU Police Chief Damon Williams said at a press conference that a criminal investigation into the shooting is underway, but did not provide any details on a potential suspect.
The campus lockdown was lifted at around 12:20 a.m. Wednesday.
The university said counseling services would be made available at Lawson Street Residence Hall for residents and students.
