Public health officials in Los Angeles County expanded beach closures on Thursday after untreated sewage was released into the ocean.
Approximately 14,400 gallons of untreated sewage was released in to Ballona Creek, beginning on Wednesday and flowing until the discharge was stopped shortly after noon on Thursday, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The agency initially closed Dockweiler State Beach from Ballona Creek to one mile south. Within hours, they expanded the closure to include Venice Beach from Ballona Creek to one mile north.
The agency is warning residents and visitors to avoid contact with ocean water and wet sand at those beaches surrounding Ballona Creek.
The Department of Public Health said it would begin conducting water sampling on Friday, and will continue to sample the water until bacterial levels return to normal. The beach closures will remain in effect until bacterial levels in the water meet public health standards, the agency said.
