Authorities are investigating whether there are unsolved cases in New York state, Las Vegas, Nev., South Carolina, and New Jersey that may be connected to Gilgo Beach murder suspect Rex A. Heuermann, per reports.
Heuermann was arrested last week and charged with the murders of three women — Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello and Megan Waterman — whose bodies were found along Ocean Parkway on Long Islands South Shore in 2010. He is considered the prime suspect in the death of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, whose body was discovered at the same location.
The 59-year-old architect was taken into custody in Manhattan, away from his home in Massapequa Park on Long Island, due to having multiple gun permits on file. Investigators say they found more than 200 firearms inside the home he shared with his wife and two adult children.
A property Heuermann owns in Chester, S.C., was also searched as part of the investigation, per reports. In New York, Heuermanns DNA was added to a statewide database, officials said.
A total of ten bodies were found along Gilgo Beach in 2010 and 2011, and the mysterious killings became the subject of multiple crime documentaries and the fictional Netflix drama “Lost Girls.”
According to police, Heuermanns family never suspected he could be a serial killer. His wife, Asa Ellerup, filed for divorce following his arrest.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains in custody.
