An Alaska Airlines plane flying into Santa Ana, Calif., amid heavy rain and wind from Tropical Storm Hilary on Sunday night experienced a rough landing that damaged its landing gear and left passengers stranded on the runway.
Flight 1288 from Seattle landed hard on the runway at John Wayne Airport at around 11:15 p.m. Sunday, causing part of its landing gear to collapse and sending sparks flying as the engine scraped the runway. The plane was unable to taxi to the gate as a result.
Photos shared by the Orange County Fire Authority show firefighters assisting passengers and pilots off the plane in the rain. No one was injured in the incident, according to the fire authority.
“Airport emergencies are just one of the many things OCFA firefighters train on. That joint training with airport staff makes these incidents run smoothly,” the fire authority said.
