Multiple people were shot at Perry High School in Iowa on Thursday morning, but it remains unclear how many people were injured or killed.
The Perry Police Department and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, along with the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said at a news briefing that the school day had not yet begun when the shooting started shortly before 7:40 a.m. The first officer arrived on the scene within about seven minutes, and found multiple gunshot victims.
There were very few students and faculty in the building, which I think contributed to a good outcome in that sense,” Infante said. He did not provide details on how many victims there were, or their condition.
Infante said the shooter had been identified by authorities, but he did not reveal their name.
“There is no further danger to the public. The community is safe,” he said. “Were just now working backwards trying to figure out everything that happened.”
Police plan to release additional updates Thursday afternoon.
Perry is about 30 miles northwest of Des Moines. Thursday marked the first day back at school following the winter break.
