MSU Public Safety Provides Update On Mass Shooting

Authorities say a note found in the wallet of Michigan State University shooter Anthony McRae may point to a motive for his killing spree on the East Lansing campus Monday night.
Junior Arielle Anderson, junior Alexandria Verner, and sophomore Brian Fraser were killed in the shooting spree, and five others were transported to Sparrow Hospital in critical condition, according to MSU Police.
MSU Police reported shots fired near Berkley Hall shortly after 8 p.m. Monday and advised the public to shelter in place. The suspect was reported to be on foot as authorities searched the campus. Shortly before 9:30 p.m., another shooting was reported at the IM East Fitness Center.
After authorities released surveillance images of the suspect, a tip quickly led police to locate McRae, 43, off campus early Tuesday, police said.
McRae died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, MSUs interim deputy chief Chris Rozman said in a Tuesday press conference.
At a press conference Thursday, MSU police confirmed that McRae had two handguns on his person that he had purchased legally but not registered.
Michigan State Police Lt. Rene Gonzalez said two pages of notes were found in McRaes wallet that “indicated where he was going to visit, and also kind of gave an indication of why, maybe a motive, but nothing we can actually confirm just yet.”
All of the victims were students. Funeral services for the deceased are scheduled for this weekend.
