A powerful earthquake struck near the coast of Michoacan state in southwestern Mexico on Monday, and could be felt more than 300 miles away in Mexico City. The magnitude 7.6 quakes epicenter was about 23 miles east of Aquila at a depth of about 9 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The threat of a possible tsunami has passed, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations Tsunami Warning Center. A video shared by Twitter user @adrian_vz shows an office building in Mexico City shaking during the quake. Overhead lights can be seen swinging as an earthquake alarm sounds. Sept. 19 is the anniversary of two large earthquakes in the country. In 2017, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake killed more than 200 people in Mexico City. In 1985, a magnitude 8 earthquake struck near Mexico City, killing thousands. At least one person was killed in Mondays temblor, “due to the fall of a fence in a shopping center in Manzanillo, Colima,” President Andrés Manuel López Obrador tweeted Monday.
