Three people were stranded in the water for more than 24 hours after their boat sank on Saturday morning, and they were fending off sharks when the Coast Guard arrived to rescue them Sunday afternoon. A family member reported the boaters overdue on Saturday evening, according to a statement from the Coast Guard. Crews from Coast Guard Station Venice, Air Station Corpus Christi and Air Station New Orleans searched an area of 1,250 square miles. The boaters 24-foot vessel sank at around 10 a.m. Saturday, leaving them without communication equipment. They were located Sunday afternoon 25 miles offshore Empire, Louisiana. A boat from Coast Guard Station Venice pulled two boaters from the water. They were hoisted from the boat, and the third boater was hoisted from the water by a crew from Air Station New Orleans. Photos shared by the Coast Guard show a life preserver that was torn during a shark attack. The boaters can be seen after rescue with blankets, being treated for hypothermia and shark bites. Another photo shows a Coast Guard rescue swimmer escorting one of the boaters to the hospital. All three men were transported to University Medical Center New Orleans. Two of the boaters sustained hand injuries due to a shark attack.
