A prison guard was shot and killed by another corrections officer in the parking lot of the East Mississippi Correctional Facility on Tuesday, officials said.
Management and Training Corporation, which operates the prison, said in a statement that the tragic and fatal altercation that occurred between two correctional officers, took place in the parking lot at around 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Officers immediately responded after hearing a gunshot and placed the suspect in restraints, MTC said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Lauderdale County Sheriffs Office was processing the suspect.
Neither the victim nor the suspect had been publicly identified early Wednesday.
Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun said both officers were on duty, making the incident an officer-involved shooting. It will be investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
The facility is fully cooperating with local law enforcement as they investigate what led to the altercation, MTC said. Our hearts go out to the victims family. MTC is committed to supporting them through this very difficult time.”
