Metro Richmond Zoo Fire Destroys Workshop Area, One Animal Dead from Blaze – Continues Operations and Plans to Rebuild

The Metro Richmond Zoo in Virginia is continuing operations and planning to rebuild after a fire Sunday night destroyed multiple structures and left 1 animal dead.
“The fire began in the zoos workshop area and quickly spread to the animal hospital, feed storage room, and zookeeper service area,” the zoo said. Ten animals were in the buildings that caught fire, and nine were rescued. One meerkat died in the animal hospital.
“The two large buildings that burned down were the home base centers for our animal care, vet care, and maintenance operations,” the zoo said. “The areas where we stored most animal feed, prepared animal diets, conducted surgeries, kept maintenance equipment, and much more are now gone.”
The zoo lost veterinary equipment including X-ray and anesthesia machines, a variety of maintenance equipment, and six golf carts. The zoo also lost the production lights, backdrops, and stage used in the annual Miracle of Christmas nativity pageant.
Despite the loss of their usual food prep area, a barn is being used by zookeepers temporarily. Feed suppliers are making regular shipments and the animals are receiving their usual diets, the zoo said.
“We are amazed by our hardworking team. They have been so flexible and creative during these hard times,” the zoo said.
“Many veterinary companies and local vet clinics have already offered their help to provide us with critical vet equipment,” the zoo said. “Zoos across the country have offered their condolences and are sending items for support.”
The zoo remains open to visitors during its regular hours. The fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
