Northbound Interstate 795 in Pikesville, Md., was shut down Friday morning after a tanker truck overturned and caught fire, according to the Maryland Department of Transportation.
Maryland State Police said troopers responded to the fiery crash site shortly before 6 a.m., along with the Baltimore County Police and Fire departments, and the Maryland Department of the Environment.
The driver was transported to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, state police said. No other injuries were reported.
A video shared by Clifford Gambrill shows a trail of flames on the highway early Friday, with thick, black smoke rising. “Man you can feel the heat,” a voice says, from a car on the other side of the highway.
The fire was extinguished, but northbound lanes of I-795 were expected to remain closed “for an extended period,” state police said. The tanker was filled with fuel, and state environment officials remained on the scene to address the spill.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, state police said.
