An investigation is underway after a suspect shot by police in Delaware allegedly stole a cruiser and led law enforcement on a multistate chase that ended with his arrest Thursday.
The New Castle County Police Department said officers responded to a domestic incident in the Cynwyd Club Apartment Complex in Wilmington at around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, and the suspect, later identified as 25-year-old Tyrese Knuckles, fled on foot.
Officers located Knuckles in the area of Limestone Road and Milltown Road and a struggle ensued, police said. During the struggle, an officer described as an eight-year veteran of the department discharged his firearm, striking Knuckles.
Knuckles then took the officer’s marked police vehicle and fled the scene, leading law enforcement on chase through Delaware and into Pennsylvania, colliding with multiple police vehicles along the way.
Knuckles allegedly crashed the stolen police vehicle on Interstate 95 in Delaware County, Penn., and fled on foot. He was ultimately taken into custody, police said, and was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds and injuries sustained during the collisions.
A New Castle County officer described as a three-year veteran of the force was admitted to Christiana Care Hospital for injuries sustained in a collision during the chase, and was in stable condition.
According to police, investigators learned Knuckles was wanted by the Philadelphia Police Department for stalking.
The Pennsylvania State Police are assisting New Castle County police in investigating the collision that occurred in Pennsylvania.
The officer who fired his weapon has been place on administrative leave pending an internal investigation and a joint investigation with the Delaware Department of Justice Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust.
