A woman was struck by lightning and killed along with her two dogs when storms rolled through Southern California on Wednesday morning, and her landlord says a home surveillance camera may have captured their last moments. Antonia Mendoza Chavez, 52, was fatally struck by lightning at around 8:50 a.m. on a trail near the San Gabriel River in Pico Rivera. Her dogs also died. A video from a NEST camera shows Chavez and her two dogs leaving the house, and pausing near a patch of grass. Local officials urged residents to remain indoors during the storm. According to the National Weather Service, lightning kills about 20 people each year in the U.S., and injures hundreds more.
