The San Diego Humane Society in California sent an emergency response team to Florida to help pet owners and animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. Videos shared by the organization show the devastation in Fort Myers, on the coast in Lee County, which suffered a direct hit. “Mike on our Emergency Response Team is going door to door in the Fort Meyers area, checking on pet owners and making sure they have what they need,” the San Diego Humane Society tweeted alongside one clip. “Lt. Ganus and Devin are in the truck with supplies, ready to help.” Mike can be seen talking to residents in heavily damaged homes surrounded by debris, and giving out pet food. A sailboat can be seen toppled on the side of the road. Recovery operations continue in Florida after Ian slammed into the states southwest coast on Wednesday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, inundating several counties with catastrophic storm surge and flooding rains. In an update Sunday evening, the Florida Medical Examiners Commission increased the official death toll to 58, with 42 of those in Lee County. District medical examiners report hurricane deaths to the commission after an autopsy confirms the death is storm-related, the agency said. U.S. President Joe Biden declared a major disaster in Florida, authorizing federal funding for individuals and governments to aid in recovery efforts.
