A Georgia sheriff’s deputy died Thursday after being run over by an Alabama police officer during a high-speed chase, officials said.
Coweta County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Minix was pursuing an allegedly stolen vehicle on Interstate 85 when it crossed the state line into Alabama in the early hours of Thursday, the sheriff’s office said.
During the apprehension of the suspect, Minix was struck a City of Lanett Police vehicle, the police department confirmed. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
DS Eric Minix was a dedicated Deputy and K9 Officer, but more importantly, he was a friend to everyone who knew him, the Coweta County Sheriff’s said in a statement. Eric leaves behind a loving wife and three daughters. We have lost a good deputy. We have lost a good man. We have lost a good friend.
The City of Lanett Police Department said the officer involved in the crash has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, which will be conducted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. They did not release the officer’s name.
Multiple Georgia agencies were involved in the pursuit, police said, and the suspect driver was ultimately taken into custody.
