Police are investigating suspected foul play after a nursing student was found dead with visible injuries at the University of Georgia’s intramural fields in Athens on Thursday.
The woman, who had not been publicly identified early Friday, was a student at the nearby University of Augusta College of Nursing.
The UGA Police Department said the woman’s friend called at around 12:07 p.m. to report that she had not returned from her morning run at the neighboring campus just a few miles away.
Campus police searched the area and found the woman in a forested area behind Lake Herrick at around 12:38 p.m. When officers found her, she was unconscious and not breathing, and had visible injuries, police said. Officers attempted to render medical aid, but when emergency medical responders arrived they pronounced her dead at the scene.
Speaking at a press conference, UGA Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark did not specify a cause of death. He said there is not yet a suspect in the case, but said police do not believe there is an immediate danger to the campus.
“When you have a suspect thats on the loose, theres always a danger. But theres no immediate danger at this time,” Clark said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department are assisting campus police in the investigation.
Classes were canceled Friday at both UGA and the Augusta University College of Nursing.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
