A Florida mother who was startled awake by what she thought was an intruder in her kitchen accidentally shot her own juvenile son in the leg, police said.
The Pembroke Pines Police Department said officers responded to a report of a shooting in a residence at around 1:43 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11. A juvenile boy was transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his leg.
Investigators say a mother, who lives alone with her juvenile son, had fallen asleep on the couch after he had gone to sleep upstairs. When she was awoken by noise in the kitchen, she feared an intruder, and retrieved a firearm from her purse, which was next to her.
According to police, the mother walked to the kitchen to investigate, just as her son walked out of the kitchen.
Both were startled by each others presence and the mother accidentally fired her gun twice, striking the floor once and inadvertently striking her son in his leg, police said in a statement.
Police said the Department of Children and Families was contacted, but there does not appear to be any criminal intent at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
