A father and son have been arrested and charged in connection with the killing of a pregnant teenager and her boyfriend in Texas last month, police said late Wednesday.
In a statement issued shortly before midnight Wednesday, the San Antonio Police Department announced the arrests of Christopher Preciado, 19, charged with capital murder, and Ramon Preciado, 53, charged with abuse of a corpse for helping his son move the bodies after the killing. Police said additional charges could still be filed.
Savanah Soto, 18, and Matthew Guerra, 22, were found dead in Guerra’s Kia Optima on Dec. 26 with gunshots to the head. They were reported missing when Soto missed an appointment to have her birth induced by doctors.
She was scheduled to be induced and she didn’t make her appointment, which is why the family went to the police to file a missing persons report, Sgt. Washington Moscoso said at a press conference.
According to detectives, they were killed five days before their remains were found. Investigators are not sure where exactly the alleged murders took place before they were moved to the location outside the apartment complex where they were found.
After police recovered Soto’s cell phone, detectives, with assistance from the U.S. Secret Service, were able to identify the suspects’ car.
Police had released a clip of surveillance video captured near the crime scene that shows two men speaking to each other before one man drives a dark Chevrolet Silverado and the other drives Guerra’s Kia in different directions.
They did a little bit of surveillance on the vehicle, determined which house it belonged to, went and knocked on the door, the father answered the door and knew why the police were there — he cooperated with the investigation, Moscoso said.
The alleged murders were the result of a “narcotics deal that went bad,” Moscoso said.
