Former NFL player Sergio Brown is back in U.S. custody on a warrant for first-degree murder in the death of his mother, after being deported from Mexico on Tuesday.
Mrytle Brown and her son were both considered missing persons after authorities and family members were unable to locate them on Sept. 16, according to the Maywood Police Department in Illinois, in the Chicago area. Myrtle Brown’s body was later discovered near a creek near the residence she shared with her son.
Cook County Medical Examiners Office later ruled the 73-year-old’s death a homicide resulting from injuries sustained in an assault.
The day after she was found dead, Sergio Brown’s brother, Nick Brown, posted on Instagram to ask for help finding him.
My brother Sergio is still missing. If anyone knows where he is I want him to know that I love you and please come home, Brown wrote.
Brown had been seen on social media posts in Mexico in the days after his mother’s death, and Mexican authorities were aware of his presence, per reports. He was not officially deported until the arrest warrant was issued.
The The Notre Dame alum posted a strange rant on social media in the days after her death, per reports, seemingly mocking the fact that he and his mother had been reported missing by family, and referencing the animated film Finding Nemo.
Multiple videos posted on social media appeared to show Brown partying in Mexico, even as his mother’s murder was being investigated.
The San Diego Police Department Threat Management Unit took Brown into custody after he entered the U.S., and is working with local and federal agencies to extradite him to Illinois, according to Maywood Police.
Brown played in the NFL from 2010 to 2016, for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Buffalo Bills.
