An elderly man in Washington, D.C., was arrested Thursday and charged with stabbing and killing his wife because he didn’t want pancakes, authorities said.
Steven Schwartz, 85, was charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of his wife, Sharron Hilda Schwartz, 81, the U.S. Attorneys Office for the District of Columbia said in a statement Thursday.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded to the 1300 block of Corcoran Street, Northwest at around 3:40 p.m. on Dec. 10 after a report of a stabbing. Officers found Sharron Schwartz injured and Steven Schwartz with self-inflicted injuries.
Both were transported to local hospitals, where Sharron Schwartz died.
According to the police affidavit, Steven Schwartz told investigators he has an aversion to food, and his wife was trying to make him eat. He was also allegedly recovering from a stroke at the time.
The pair were married for 40 years, and, according to police, Schwartz told investigators that he loved her and prayed the killing was just a delusion.
Schwartz pleaded not guilty.
