Drought in Mississippi River Causes Low Water Levels and Resurfaced Shipwrecks

Water levels remain low in the Mississippi River despite a few rounds of rain bringing a slight increase over the last few weeks, according to the National Weather Service. A video shared Tuesday by Twitter user @ldogg256 in Vicksburg, Miss., shows the dry, sandy riverbed exposed in wide strips along the rivers banks. The drying river has exposed Civil War artifacts in Tennessee, a shipwreck in Louisiana and human remains in Mississippi, among other things, per reports. Areas along the Mississippi River experienced severe drought conditions over the summer, as did much of the western U.S., with the Colorado River system also experiencing historic low levels. The Mississippi River gauge located in Vicksburg was most recently observed at two feet on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. At that gauge, five feet or less is considered low, while 43 feet is the flood stage.
