Defendant Attacks Las Vegas Judge During Sentencing Hearing

A shocking courtroom video shows a defendant leaping over the bench to assault a Las Vegas judge who was about to sentence him to jail on Wednesday.
Deobra Redden pleaded guilty in November to the charge of attempted battery with substantial bodily harm, and appeared in court Wednesday for sentencing. His attorney asked for Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus to grant him a suspended sentence, and Redden pleaded for leniency.
I feel like I shouldn’t be sent to prison, but if it’s appropriate for you, then you gotta do what you gotta do, Redden told Holthus.
But the judge considered his criminal history, including a previous prison sentence for a domestic battery conviction, too much to ignore.
I think it’s time he got a taste of something else, because I just can’t with that history, she said.
As she was about to deliver his sentence, Redden could be heard cursing before leaping over the defense table and the judge’s bench and slamming Holthus into the wall before court officials were able to pull him away.
Holthus sustained minor injuries, but was not hospitalized. A court marshal was taken to the hospital for treatment of a head injury.
Following the attack, Redden will be back in court on Thursday to answer new charges of battery and battery against a protected person.
