A municipal employee is accused of setting up a clandestine cryptocurrency mining operation in a crawl space at a school in Cohasset, Mass., police said.
The Cohasset Police Department was first alerted to something amiss at Cohasset Middle High School in December 2021, according to a statement. The director of facilities told investigators that during a routine inspection, he discovered “electrical wires, temporary duct work, and numerous computers, that seemed out of place.”
The equipment was located in a “remote crawl space under the school,” police said. After inquiring with the towns IT director, the setup was determined to be a cryptocurrency mining operation that was “unlawfully attached to the school electrical system.”
Cohasset police sought assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service and the Department of Homeland Security to remove the equipment and conduct a forensic investigation.
After a three-month investigation, Nadeam Nahas, a Town of Cohasset assistant facilities director, was identified as a suspect.
A criminal complaint accuses Nahas, 39, of fraudulent use of electricity and vandalizing a school. He resigned his position at the town in early 2022, police said.
