When a cow named Ruby became stuck up to her neck in a muddy pit on Sunday it took around a dozen people to pull her to safety, officials said.
When Ruby’s owners saw that she had become stuck in a marshy area of their rural property near Mist, in northwestern Oregon, they contacted some volunteers with the Mist-Birkenfeld Rural Fire Protection District. Those volunteers in turn activated a full response with animal technical rescue equipment, Mist-Birkenfeld RFPD said in a statement.
Videos and photos shared by the fire department show around a dozen people getting their hands dirty and using straps and boards to pull Ruby out of the pit before she sank completely.
We are also udder-ly grateful for members from Vernonia Rural Fire Protection District and Westport Fire and Rescue- Oregon who graciously assisted us on scene and we are pleased to report Ruby is out of the mud and recovering, Mist-Birkenfeld RFPD said.
We are so glad this call had a good outcome, the fire department said, adding that it wouldn’t have been possible without donor Angela R. A few years ago, she donated a horse trailer, specialized animal rescue equipment, and a three-day training course, in which experts from Arizona drove to Birkenfeld with their equipment to train local personnel.
Once again, this equipment and training were imperative in leading to a positive outcome for an animal in need, the fire department said. Thank you to our many volunteers who responded and weren’t afraid to get in the mud to help Ruby and her family!
