Police in Philadelphia are searching for a suspect who escaped custody while being discharged from a hospital early Monday.
Alleem Borden, 29, was in custody on suspicion of vehicle theft when he escaped from officers — while wearing handcuffs — during his discharge from Temple University Hospitals Episcopal Campus, on the 100 block of E. Lehigh Avenue in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood, at around 6:45 a.m. Monday.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner of Investigations Frank Vanore said Borden was being escorted back to a police vehicle when he ran from officers.
He outran them with handcuffs behind him and disappeared in the 2700 block of Hancock Street, Vanore said. Borden was at the hospital because he had complained of pain during processing, Vanore said.
If a prisoner complains of pain or has an injury, it’s our policy that we take them to a facility, he said. He was checked out and discharged.
According to the Philadelphia Police Department, Borden’s last known address was a home on the 1300 block of N. Allison Street in West Philadelphia.
Vanore said Borden was arrested Sunday after a delivery driver’s car was reported stolen, and he was allegedly found sleeping inside it when it was located on the 1100 block of Frankford Avenue in the Fishtown neighborhood.
Borden was described as wearing the same blue plaid shirt that appears in his mugshot when he escaped.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
