Mourners gathered at a Brooklyn mosque on Thursday for the funeral of New York City Police Officer Adeed Fayaz.
Fayaz, 26, was off duty when he was shot during a robbery attempt on Saturday, and died Tuesday at Brookdale Hospital.
A video shared by Edward Caban, First Deputy Commissioner of the NYPD, shows the dignified transfer of Fayaz from the hospital, with fellow officers lining the street at attention.
“Police Officer Adeed Fayaz was a father, a husband, a son, and a protector of our great city,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell tweeted Tuesday. “Officer Fayaz was shot Saturday night and he tragically succumbed to his injuries today. Our department deeply mourns his passing, and his family and loved ones are in our prayers.”
The Brooklyn District Attorneys Office on Wednesday announced Randy Jones, 38, has been charged with Fayazs murder, along with attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.
According to police, Fayaz and his brother-in-law went out Saturday to buy a vehicle advertised on Facebook Marketplace. Jones allegedly held them up at gunpoint for the $24,000 purchase price. Police say a dashboard camera in the brother-in-laws vehicle was instrumental in identifying the car the suspect used to flee.
The funeral drew hundreds of mourners Thursday to the Makki Masjid Muslim Community Center in Brooklyn. Although off duty, Fayaz received full honors, including a police motorcycle escort and procession.
