8-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot With ‘High Powered Air Rifle’ In Arizona

An 8-year-old Arizona boy is dead after he was shot in the chest with a high powered air rifle, authorities said Tuesday.
The Cochise County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a shooting incident near the 1000 block of Pottery Lane in St. David at around 5:07 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, the found the boy had been shot in the center of his chest cavity with a high powered air rifle that shoots 22 caliber pellets.
The boy was initially transported about a mile to waiting emergency medical personnel at the intersection of Highway 80 and East Apache Powder Road, where deputies were working to secure a landing zone for a medical helicopter, the sheriff’s office said.
Instead, the boy was immediately transported by ground to Benson Hospital in Benson, about six miles away, the sheriff’s office said. The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital at approximately 6 p.m.
The boy’s name was not publicly released, and no information about a potential suspect was provided. The sheriff’s office said the incident remains under investigation.
