A 76-year-old Florida man shot an intruder who got into a physical struggle with his 74-year-old wife during a burglary, authorities said Wednesday.
The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said Robert Jackson, 51, was arrested and charged with burglary with battery and attempted residential burglary after being shot by one of his victims.
Deputies first responded to a call about a man yelling in the middle of the 16400 block of Gulf Boulevard in North Redington Beach at around 3:16 a.m. Wednesday. While deputies were responding to that call, a second 911 call came in at 3:23 a.m., reporting a residential burglary nearby, at 208 Bath Club Boulevard North.
When deputies arrived, they found Jackson in the road on Bath Club Boulevard with a single gunshot wound.
According to the sheriff’s office, detectives learned that Jackson was the man who had been reported yelling in the road on Gulf Boulevard before traveling east on Bath Club Boulevard.
Jackson allegedly used a rock to smash through a front window at 208 Bath Club Boulevard North and entered the home. There he encountered Sherry Treadwell, 74, and began to struggle with her physically, the sheriff’s office said. Her husband, John Treadwell, heard her scream his name in distress and saw her struggling with Jackson. Treadwell retrieved his firearm and shot Jackson in the shoulder.
Jackson fled and allegedly attempted to break into another residence nearby, but was unsuccessful. He then fled down the street, where he was apprehended by responding deputies.
Jackson was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Jackson was booked into the Pinellas County Jail after being released from the hospital.
