Six people were injured when a chaotic fight broke out outside a funeral home in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Tuesday, police said.
The Salt Lake City Police Department said Tuesday it received multiple calls shortly before 1:30 p.m. about a fight and stabbing at the funeral home at 372 East 100 South. Officers arrived to find four people injured, one of them critically. All four were transported to local hospitals.
Witnesses reported a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed, and officers stopped a vehicle matching the description several blocks away. Two occupants were transported to the hospital by paramedics and were released, while the third occupant was detained for questioning.
There was some sort of fight that broke out, Salt Lake City Police Department spokesperson Brent Weisberg said at a press conference Tuesday. He said it was a very chaotic scene.
Police said the violence was not random, and there was no further danger to the community, but that they were still investigating to determine which people are victims and which are suspects.
“I want to recognize the response from our police officers,” said Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown. “Several of our officers provided immediate, life-saving measures to the victims. This type of incident is extraordinarily rare for our city. I know our detectives are working quickly to determine the motive for this incident, but I am relieved to know that based on the preliminary investigation this was not a random attack.”
Detectives with the police department’s Violent Crime and Robbery Squad and Gang Unit are assisting with the investigation.
Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward or submit an anonymous tip.
