Five people were injured in a shooting Tuesday night outside a homecoming event at Morgan State University in Baltimore, authorities said.
Students and their families were leaving the packed Murphy Fine Arts auditorium after the crowning of Mr. and Ms. Morgan State University when the gunshots rang out at around 9:25 p.m., sending crowds scrambling for cover.
Police warned those on campus to avoid the area around the Thurgood Marshall Hall and the Murphy Fine Arts Center, and the campus went into lockdown.
SWAT teams cleared a dorm where a window was broken out, but did not find a suspect.
“We didnt open the campus up until our SWAT team had cleared the building where we thought the suspect may have ran or where we thought the shot came from,” Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a press conference. “They cleared every single floor twice.”
Four students and one other person, ages 18 to 22, were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, Worley said.
The lockdown was lifted at around 12:30 a.m., and the university canceled all classes on Wednesday.
Investigators believe the shooting occurred outside, but no suspect description was available early Wednesday. The investigation is ongoing, and police did not provide information about how many shooters may have been involved.
Police are asking anyone with information to come forward, or submit an anonymous tip.
